Declutter Before You Move

Declutter Before You Move

Inspecting items that are merely taking up space if you intend to transfer is crucial. Packing light will help you keep your moving expenses down because the lighter you move, the less expensive it will be.

Thousand Hills Realty advises renters to constantly consider moving less when ready to move. Look for anything you don't need and dispose of, donate, or sell the excess. If you can get rid of it now, you won't have to find a place for it in the new location. Here is a checklist of things to remember when organizing and maintaining focus.

Make one box of your must-have essentials

Create an "essential" box and fill it with items you will need during and right after the relocation before packing and stowing everything. Consider items for the kitchen, a few bathroom necessities, phone chargers, and other items. Before you begin, set it aside so you won't rush around trying to find your deodorant while the movers work.

Go room by room

Plan to proceed room by room and avoid taking on more than you can handle. Declutter things you haven't used in a year are beyond repair or have minimal sentimental value when ready to move. Simplifying your possessions makes relocating easier and helps you start over in your new area.

Bedroom and bathroom

Getting rid of everything you don't use or enjoy is a good way to declutter the master bedroom and bathroom before moving. Utilizing the one-year guideline, concentrate on wearing as little as possible in the bedroom. It's probably time to sell or donate anything that hasn't been worn in a year. In the restroom, go through the makeup and toiletries and throw away everything old or unused.

Start with the clothes when you're trying to tidy the bedroom. It's time to go with an item if you haven't worn it in over a year. It's also time to discard anything you find missing buttons, severely discolored, or holes in it. Be sure to check both your closet and dresser. Regarding off-season apparel and bedding, Thousand Hills Realtyadvises evaluating whether to donate them or move them into a new residence.

Living room

Moving is an excellent opportunity to get rid of that ugly sofa you've been unable to sit on for years and the bulky entertainment center that once housed an antiquated tube TV. This is also a perfect opportunity to eliminate any large toys or baby gear your kids no longer utilize. The living room is a great place to purge since it tends to gather clutter.

Kitchen

When did you last check the dates on products other than milk? Examine your pantry carefully to ensure that all your snacks, canned products, and spices are up to date.

Remember to include kitchen appliances as well. Pressure cookers, air fryers, spiralizers, and other gadgets are all over Pinterest, and you couldn't resist getting one. However, trends change. They are merely taking up space right now. Make a list of all the gadgets you don't use, put them aside, and ask friends to give them a second chance at life.

Schedule at least an hour a day to declutter

Going through your junk drawer can be tedious, so set aside an hour each day to complete your decluttering checklist to prevent procrastination. Though you can accomplish more, set a one-hour timer to complete the bare minimum. Sort through your clothing, trinkets, and nightstands, starting with your closet.

If you hit a nostalgic item, set it aside

Even the simplest thing has the power to ruin your day and send you down a nostalgic rabbit hole. Giving away something that evokes such strong feelings is difficult. Don't put off making such decisions till last to avoid becoming lazy. It will help you stay focused and buy you more time to decide about them later.

Reconsider your décor

Consider the purchase dates of your mattress and dining set. When should I replace them? How about the rest of your decor? Take a moment to consider whether you still identify with your home design style. Now is the perfect time to give your furniture to someone who will use it going forward or sell it in your neighborhood organization.

Take a break

Take a moment to consider whether you still identify with your home design style. We advise against putting off moving when you have plans. Rushing through the decluttering process could make it less successful and lead to the disposal of valuables. Commence as soon as possible, ideally two weeks before informing your landlord that you will be moving out.
