If you have a messy, cluttered closet, it probably causes you a lot of frustration in the mornings when you are choosing the outfit that you want to wear for the day.
Having your space unorganized will keep you searching through everything until you find the right outfit. And even when you already know what you want to wear, chances are you will end up digging through all of your stuff to find what you’re looking for. If you would like to have a relaxed and manageable dressing experience in the morning, and you want to get your closet under control, try these simple solutions to help make your closet tidy and clutter-free.
Remove Everything
The first thing that you need to do in order to declutter your closet is to remove everything from it. Removing everything includes every hanger, bag and purse, and every personal item on the shelves. Clean off the floor of your closet too, moving every pair of shoes, and any storage boxes. When you are ready to put everything back in, you'll be happy to see a blank space to start with.
Removing everything from your closet can be a daunting task, however if you don't, you'll end up placing items back inside in a disorderly place instead of making significant changes. For your closet to become more organized, place everything first on your bed. Once you have emptied your closet, you're ready to go through the items and put them back in an orderly arrangement.
Categorize
With each personal item you place on the bed or the floor, it becomes time for you to categorize all of your things. If you are the kind of person who likes to separate items by season, then do so. But others want to organize things by categories such as casual clothes, work clothes, and dress clothes. Some other people prefer to keep shirts with shirts, underwear with underwear, pants with pants, and dresses with dresses, etc.
Choose the way of categorizing that will work best for you and separate items into the piles and groupings of your choice. By classifying your stuff, it will be easier for you to find what you’re looking for, when you want to use it, and you’ll know exactly where to put it when you’re done.
Assess every item individually
Once you have categorized your clothes, you now need to tackle the hardest part of the job - deciding what to keep. Take a look at each item, one by one. As you go through all your items, ask yourself a few key questions to help you determine what you should keep and what to let go of.
Ask questions, such as do I still need this? If the answer is no, problem solved, it can go. If you have some stuff that you don't think you’ll use anymore, use this opportunity to get rid of it.
Even if it's your favorite tee shirt or sweatshirt that you love, but you don't wear it anymore, due to tears or stains, see if a cleaner or seamstress can fix it for you. If not, free up your closet space and toss it out.
If you are holding onto a jacket or top because you like the color, but you don't feel comfortable wearing it anymore, it’s probably time to let it go. And if you are still keeping those pants because they are a designer brand but they won't fit you, give them to a friend who may be able to wear them.
You have to balance out all of the contributing factors as you are asking yourself these questions. You may need to think twice about some pieces, as it can be tough to decide what items you want to keep. Getting rid of some of your items though is an essential part of decluttering. If you can't follow this step of the decluttering process, then your closet is going to become messy and cluttered again in a week or two.
Downsize and donate
After selecting the items that you want to get rid of, place them in a bag for donation. If there are items that you're not sure you’re ready to give away, store them in a bag outside your closet. Give yourself a few weeks to wear them. If after that time you haven’t worn them or even thought about using them, it’s a good sign that you should let them go.
Downsizing is not just about getting rid of clothes; you can donate other items such as shoes, handbags, and accessories. Most of the time, those little things are taking up the most of the space in your closet, and they are also the easiest to become disorganized.
To make your closet look different and better than before, don't just clean and declutter it. Be sure to sort out and categorize all items. A well-organized closet will instantly make it look and feel neat and clutter-free.
