Birthdays are always a fun occasion to have a party or to go out and celebrate someone special and the milestone of their birth. While heading out to dinner or meeting up with friends for a special activity is what a lot of people often do to mark the occasion, sometimes going out isn’t always an option. Whether you’re staying home this year for a change of pace, due to financial reasons, or because of illness or health restrictions, these fun decorating ideas will get you ready for a birthday party at home.

Create A Focal Point

While it would be great to be able to decorate every room in the house, that is most likely not a reasonable or cost effective idea. Find one area to focus on and create a festive focal point. A good place to create this space may be at the kitchen or dining room table, around the living room, or on the fireplace mantle.

Decorate your focal point using a tablecloth in a fun or themed print, balloons, a vase of flowers, or a birthday banner.

Use Balloons

Balloons are a fun way to add color and cheer to any party scene. Group them together to make a balloon bouquet for an extra punch and place them on the side of the mantle or tie them to the back of the birthday person’s chair to make them feel extra special.

Another idea is to create a “sea of balloons” by blowing up a whole bag of balloons and letting them all “float” around on the floor of the room that you’re decorating.

Put Up Streamers

Crepe streamers are an inexpensive and festive way to bring a pop of color to the party. They come in a large assortment of hues and usually only cost a dollar or two per package.

Using scotch tape to secure it, twist the streamers and attach to almost anywhere you can think of - to cabinet doors, on mirrors, around banisters, or drape them dramatically in an archway. Choose multiple colors to mix and match with your chosen coordinating party theme.

Don’t Forget The Cake

If you’ll be celebrating with a cake, be sure to get the cake out and display it as part of the birthday decorations. Cakes are not only a tasty treat, but nowadays are often beautiful and fun to look at as well. You can also arrange any themed or colored plates, silverware and napkins around the cake to make a larger display of it. Cut small pieces of curling ribbon and toss around the table for a fun confetti look, making the overall effect even more celebratory.

Decorate Outside

An area that is often overlooked is outside the home on the front porch or even on the deck out back. Tie a happy birthday balloon on the handrail of the banister or put balloons out on the balcony rail. Attach a birthday banner to the front door or patio glass for all the neighbors to see. Not only will the person having the birthday be surprised, but it will also alert the neighbors of the special day, and perhaps encourage them to reach out and send a happy birthday message via text or a phone call. These small acts of kindness will make the birthday person feel even more special.

Make Something Homemade

While receiving gifts is always fun, it isn’t usually what is most important to the recipient. A homemade gift that is thoughtful and represents something meaningful to the birthday person is always appreciated.

Homemade signs and banners can often also be more meaningful as well. These signs can be personalized to incorporate a special nickname, favorite colors, personal photos, or inside jokes that will really be special to look at.

Homemade cards are also a way to let someone know how special they are and how much they mean to you. These heartfelt words will be treasured for years to come and may be kept as a memento of the special day and celebration that you helped create.

Be sure to take advantage of decorating your home with these handmade gifts, to be enjoyed throughout the party.

Birthdays are a wonderful day to celebrate. Using these tips for fun decorations to celebrate at home can help make the day even brighter for the person celebrating.
