Many people love living in an apartment, but wish they had more space in their bedroom to make it a personal place of sanctuary. Fortunately, there are plenty of ideas to help you make your small bedroom look bigger.

Whether you're planning to move to a new place or modify the small bedroom you are currently occupying, here are some simple tips on making your small apartment bedroom look bigger.

Light-colored paint for your small room

Light colors reflect light, which can help make a small space seem bigger. So, it's good to use light-colored paint on the walls, to make your bedroom look brighter and appear to have more area than it does.  Bright white seems to look stylish in every room, as do most neutral tones, such as beige or warm gray. Ask your property manager for approval to paint your bedroom area to visually enlarge the space.

Color-coordinate your small room

When you paint a small room with your desired color, minimize contrast as much as possible. Decorate in a monochromatic color palette, which is based on different shades of the same color, preventing the space from looking too busy. The colors that can help make a room look bigger are light blue and bright green.

These colors are great options, as colder colors are more likely to give the room depth. However, you can still use warmer tones as long as you don't choose the ones that are too overwhelming, such as bright red.

Keep furniture to a minimum

If you have a small bedroom, don't keep too much furniture. You want to save as much space as you can. Try to avoid heavy and outdated items.

Additionally, you can use a few tricks to create  extra storage in your bedroom without losing space. For instance, you can utilize the space under your bed for storage with just a few containers. Or get an ottoman that opens to store blankets and more instead.

Use furniture with exposed legs

If you want to make your room look bigger, get furniture with exposed legs. If the furniture doesn't touch the floor directly, it can create space where it wouldn't be otherwise and makes your small bedroom feel much airier.

You can also get added benefits by placing baskets underneath to store other important things, and to keep most of the extra space free from clutter. But if you already have furniture that touches the floor, look up some DIY technique to add legs so you don’t have to incur the cost of buying something new.

Place mirrors in critical spots

Placing mirrors in critical spots is one of the best bedroom ideas as it can help open up the space. Mirrors always give the impression of a larger room, and they also reflect light making darker areas look more luminous. If you want to create the illusion of having a bigger space, place a floor-length mirror on an area of the wall that doesn't get much light or hang the mirror on the doors of your wardrobe.

You can also make your bedroom look more open and bright by taking advantage of natural light in the room. Hang a mirror opposite a window or place a mirror behind a light source.

Hang ceiling-to-floor curtains

One more impressive way to make your room look more spacious is to hang ceiling-to-floor curtains. When you hang drapes starting from the ceiling down to the floor or even an inch above it, you'll achieve two room-opening effects. If your bedroom windows are smaller, these curtains will make your room appear longer and wider.

The lengthy drapes will lead your eyes upward and create the feeling of an apartment with higher ceilings. Be careful in choosing the color, though; choose pastel or transparent curtains to make sure they don't cut off a vital light source.

Keep bedding simple

Using minimal bedding can help make your small bedroom look bigger and brighter. Don't be tempted to choose bold, heavily patterned designs and as many pillows as possible. When you keep complex bedding setups, it can make your bedroom seem cramped and make it feel cluttered. Instead, choose modest bedding to make sure the bed is part of the room's flow – ditch decorative pillows and embellished designs in favor of pure light-colored linens.

So, if you live in an apartment with a small bedroom and want to make the most of your small space, following these simple tips can make your small bedroom look bigger and brighter.
