Many homeowners know that moving to a new place is challenging, but it doesn’t mean they can't enjoy the new journey along the way.

It’s possible for kids to find the move enjoyable too. If they are leaving their friends and moving to an unfamiliar place though, they may find it a little harder. Let your kids know the positive side of moving so they will enjoy it more. Try to make the moving process an exciting adventure for the kids, so you and them, all find it more appealing. If you’re moving with kids these tips will make it easier.

Make Moving Day an Adventure

Moving to a new place can easily be turned into a fun and adventurous experience. Kids often have the mindset of an adventurer, so it may be easier for them to make it fun, than it would be for an adult. At first, your kids may feel scared of the moving experience but will often become curious and excited, when you make the journey fun and adventurous. After seeing the positives, their mindset will change.

Try to make sure your moving day will offer fun to your kids every step of the way. From packing things to moving day, they should make the most of the positive changes. Tell them about some exciting places in the new location before you proceed to that place.

Keep as Many Routines as Possible

During the actual move, everything will most likely be off schedule. Keeping the things you’ll need in order and easily accessible, is often the first thing to do. Keep sleep schedules and bedtime routines as close to regular as possible, and make sure all chores continue to get done, such as feeding the family pet.

Continue to do any additional chores the following morning and keep as many routines as possible, including easy tasks such as arranging things and making the place clean. Let your kids handle some responsibilities like taking care of their items and making sure they are safe while moving to your new place.

Sympathize With Your Kids

Know the fact: moving is a big challenge for the whole family. It’s hard for kids, and for adults as well.

You’re leaving the place and the memories behind, in some way or another. Your kids should know that it’s ok to be sad about it. Teach your kids not to feel sorry for themselves, and not to become apathetic, while also showing them that you have concern about their feelings. Show that you are also sad to leave the place. If your kids have friends who have moved, ask them to share some of their experiences, in order to let your children know that moving is a normal part of life.

Use Moving to Downsize

Moving is an excellent way for many homeowners to downsize. Get your kids involved with reducing and downsizing on many things. Get rid of the things that aren’t necessary anymore, in order to make room for more important things.

For most children, it is natural for them to hold on to material possessions as a form of comfort and fun, but that’s not a good habit to carry into adulthood. Moving to a new place is a great opportunity to help teach your kids about how to break the ties to material possessions.

Let Your Kids Help with the Move

A good way for your kids to forget being sad about leaving friends behind is to let them join the preparation of moving, such as arranging things and packing boxes. Let them help with packing their clothes and let them pick the toys they’re taking, and then pack them in a specified box. The kids can make good decisions on packing things as well. They can suggest where to place their stuff.

Once you arrive at your new location, the kids can help set up their room. In fact, it’s a good idea to let them set up their room to give them a feeling of being responsible—in a good sense, but not wholly independent—just a feeling of having a say where their things will go will give them a sense of responsibility and pride.

Prepare and Plan the Schedule of Moving

If you plan and give yourself ample time to prepare for the move, you won’t feel as stressed come moving day. You may need to wait until close to moving time before you start to pack some things, so your kids can continue enjoying their toys. The earlier you start preparing for the move, the easier it will be. Do it in stages and make your kids’ room or favorite things, the last to pack.

Moving to a new place doesn’t have to be complicated; it’s more about the way you plan. The outlook your child has about moving to a new place will have everything to do with their enjoyment of the entire moving process. Being prepared, know where their things are packed, and even pack a few snacks for the car ride to the new location, to help the process of moving with kids go easier.
