Many young people entering college and going solo for the first time, may be apprehensive to live alone in an apartment because they are unsure what challenges they may face.
Whether you're a freshman going into college or a fresh college graduate looking for a job in the area, living alone for the first time can be a life-changing experience. Make your solo experience happy and fulfilling with these simple tips.
Go out and enjoy the things around you
Come out of your “cave” for some fresh air and sunshine; it is good for you. Spending some time around the neighborhood, even for a few minutes, will help you avoid loneliness and boredom that are common feelings when you are living alone. Do some research about the area and try to find some activities that would be of interest to you, instead of spending all of your time doing nothing in your apartment.
Get to know yourself
Since you will be spending a significant amount of time alone, be sure to get to know yourself! Going solo is the perfect time where you can have the opportunity to assess your enjoyment of hobbies, interests, passions, your strengths and weaknesses, and other little things that make you happy of being alone in your apartment.
Learn to shop for groceries and cook
One of the first exciting experiences you will have when living alone is deciding what you are going to buy from the grocery store to prepare for your meals. Preparing a meal for yourself can be challenging, especially if it's your first time. However, you don't need to worry about how the meal you cook will taste, as there isn't anyone around to criticize your meal preparation. With some determination, a little strategy and practicing your home cooking every day, you will soon master the skill.
Practice good organizational habits
If you don't already have good organizational skills, make sure to learn them and to begin to put these skills into practice. Always do your best work. Living alone can sometimes lead to chores and messes to easily get out of control. So as a solo renter, it's essential for you to not leave bowls of cereal and unclean dishes for days in your sink, or to scatter your dirty laundry everywhere. Practice organizational habits by setting up a cleaning schedule or keep notes of the chores that you should tackle daily.
Buy some added security
If you are a little worried to live by alone for safety reasons (or you feel hesitant), then consider buying some added security, such as an alarm system. You'll become more comfortable living alone in your apartment, knowing you're safe and secure.
Decorate to your heart's content
Another good thing about living alone is that you can decorate the space however you wish. No one else will be there to criticize your choices. As you have the time and money to do, choose decor and furnishings for each room that pleases your tastes. A well-decorated apartment that suits your tastes will make you feel happy and comfortable.
Become your own repairman
When you live alone, try to practice self-reliance. Tightening a screw or fixing a clogged sink are easy maintenance issues that anyone can tackle.
Make a budget and stick to it
If you create a budget for your monthly expenses, your bank account won’t come up short before the next payday. Before you even move into your new apartment alone, you need to accurately budget to avoid delays in buying any necessities. When you stick to a budget, you'll find it easier to pay for all of your monthly expenses.
Invite guests over
How can your new apartment be appreciated if you don't invite guests over every once in a while? Invite your friends to come see your apartment and to stay for dinner, enjoy a game night, or have a lot of laughs during a night of karaoke. Plus, your awesome decorations will surely catch their attention.
Enjoy your privacy
After your guests leave you will probably realize that the peace, quiet and privacy are all factors that you actually enjoy about living alone. No one will be there to notice the clutter left behind after the party. You can clean up right away, or you can go to sleep right away without putting anything away, it’s completely up to you! That’s just another perk of being on your own.
You have the control and endless possibilities open to you if you live on your own. So, live it up and be happy.
